GETTING TO KNOW BROTHER MICHAEL KUM- THE LAST LA SALLIAN BROTHER TO SERVE IN
ST PAUL’S INSTITUTION.
Not many present Paulians would know who Rev. Bro. Michael Kum is. In February 1991 St.Paul’s Institution witnessed the transfer of Rev. Bro. Michael Kum who was the last serving LaSallian brother in St. Paul’s Institution to St. Francis' Institution in Malacca. After that no Christian Brother taught in St. Paul's.
Bro. Michael came to St.Paul’s Institution in the year 1988. At that time the Brother Director was Bro. James Macken. When Bro. Michael arrived, he first took notice that there was no proper society for the Catholic students in this LaSallian school. Together with Bro. James Macken, they both formed the Paulian Catholic Community which is also known as PCX. A prayer room was built and blessed by Fr. Jocahim Tan and is used by present Paulians even till today. In that year, under the guidance of Bro. Michael and the help of Mr. James Lee, they managed to produce 9 newsletters that kept Paulians well informed.
In 1989, the first ever LaSallian Convention took place. All LaSallian schools in Malaysia gathered together as one for this Convention. Bro. Michael was in charge of taking the St.Paul’s delegates to the convention. He brought two boys and two girls, all of them being prefects in the school. After the Convention, it was decided that it was time that a special club be created in the school for La Sallians. The club was named Paulian La Salle Confreres also known as PLC. Confreres means Brothers and Sisters cause being a part of a LaSallian school means that your part of a big family.
Bro. Michael best memories in St.Paul’s were that SPI had the best St.John Ambulance Cadets in Malaysia. He also added in saying that till today he has not seen better. He also remembers the Scouts. The dedication of the members was few of the things that he remembers. Bro. Michael, we thank you for what you have done for us back then in keeping our school on par with excellence. Your service to the school will not be forgotten. Thank You Rev. Bro. Michael Kum. ONCE A PAULIAN ALWAYS A PAULIAN!
